Bacolod is the only independent city in the Negros Island Region of the Philippines. The city has 61 barangays.

Every fourth Sunday of October, Bacolod celebrates the MassKara Festival. The city is geographically located in Negros Occidental, Philippines but is independent from the province.

On April 25, 2010, Kristine G. Alonso represented Bacolod at Miss Philippines Earth 2010 and competed against 48 other candidates at Aquatica at Manila Ocean Park in Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.

On December 2, 2011, Vickie Marie Rushton represented Bacolod at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2011 and competed against 29 other candidates at The Arena in San Juan, Metro Manila, Philippines. She won the title.
