Batanes is one of the five provinces of the Cagayan Valley region of the Philippines. The others are Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino.

Founded on June 26, 1783, Batanes has six municipalities namely Basco, Itbayat, Ivana, Mahatao, Sabtang and Uyugan. The municipalities collectively have 29 barangays.

Born in Itbayat, Marilou Horlina Cayco attended Arellano University in Sampaloc, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines. She has been the governor of Batanes since June 30, 2016 and she turned 58 on November 22, 2018.

Basco is the capital of Batanes. The municipality was named after José Máximo Ramón Basco y Pérez de Vargas, who served as the 53rd governor-general of the Philippines.

Basco turned 74 on May 29, 1805 and died in Málaga,Málaga, Andalusia, Spain on September 23, 1805. He was born in Ronda, Málaga to Francisco José Vasco y Valderrama and Josefa Isabel Emeteria María Teresa Nicolasa Antonia Pérez de Vargas Sotomayor y Rivera.

Born in Basco, Telesforo Falces Castillejos served as the governor of Batanes from June 30, 1988 to June 30, 1998 and from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2010. He turned 72 on January 5, 2019.

On April 15, 2012, Liezl Alcantara represented Batanes at Binibining Pilipinas 2012 and competed against 29 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila. She was unplaced.
