Butuan is the only independent city in the Caraga Administrative Region of the Philippines. The region has five provinces namely Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, the Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.
While Butuan is geographically located in Agusan del Norte, the city is independent from the province. The city is around 29 kilometers away from Cabadbaran, the capital of the province.

On April 25, 2010, Stephany Dianne Damondamon Stefanowitz represented Butuan at Miss Philippines Earth 2010 and competed against 48 other candidates at Aquatica at Manila Ocean Park in Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines. She finished in the Top 10 and was named one of the five runners-up.
On March 18, 2018, Rose Marie Murphy represented Butuan at Binibining Pilipinas 2018 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila. She was unplaced.
