Cotabato City is geographically located in Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines but the city is independent from the province. The city and the province are in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

On December 22, 1979, Cotabato City became a highly urbanized city. It was established as a municipality on October 29, 1903 and it became a city on June 20, 1959.

Created on November 17, 1989, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the Philippines had five provinces namely Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi. On February 26, 2019, the region was replaced by the BARMM, which has five provinces namely Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi and three cities namely Cotabato City, Lamitan and Marawi.

Cotabato City has 37 barangays and a total land area of 176.0 square kilometers. Every December 19, the city celebrates the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival in honor of Shariff Mohammad Kabunsuan, an Arab missionary from Johor, Malaysia.

Erected in 2011, the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque, the second largest mosque in the Philippines, is situated in Cotabato City. The city is also home to the Kutawato Caves, the Tamontaka Church and the Tantawan Park.
