Digos is the capital of Davao del Sur, Philippines and the only component city in the province. The province has nine municipalities namely Bansalan, Hagonoy, Kiblawan, Magsaysay, Malalag, Matanao, Padada, Santa Cruz and Sulop.

The Philippines’ Davao Region has five provinces namely Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental. Davao City, the only independent city in the region, is geographically located in Davao del Sur.
On June 1, 1903, Moro Province was established in the country with five districts namely Zamboanga, Lanao, Cotabato, Davao and Jolo. On July 23, 1914, the province was dissolved and replaced by the Department of Mindanao and Sulu, which had seven provinces namely Agusan, Bukidnon, Cotabato, Davao, Lanao, Zamboanga and Sulu.
On May 8, 1967, Davao was divided into three provinces namely Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental. On December 22, 1979, Davao City became a highly urbanized city.
Compostella Valley was founded on March 7, 1998 and renamed Davao de Oro on December 7, 2019. Davao Occidental was founded on October 28, 2013.
