Davao Oriental is one of the five provinces in the Davao Region of the Philippines. The others are Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental.
Mati is the only component city of Davao Oriental, which has a total of 183 barangays. The province has 10 municipalities namely Baganga, Banaybanay, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, Governor Generoso, Lupon, Manay, San Isidro and Tarragona.
Born in Manay, Nelson “Boy” Lechoncito Dayanghirang served as the congressman of the first district of Davao Oriental from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2016. He has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2016.
Dayanghirang joined the Nacionalista Party in 2007, the Liberal Party of the Philippines in 2015 and the Hugpong ng Pagbabago in 2018. He turned 53 on January 24, 2019.

On July 7, 2004, Jessle Cristilyn Morales represented Davao Oriental at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2024 and competed against 37 other candidates at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Theater of Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She finished in the Top 15.
