The governments of General Santos City, Philippines and Jersey City, New Jersey, United States formalized their sister cities agreement at a signing ceremony at the Council Chambers of the Jersey City Hall in Jersey City on August 14, 2018. It was led by General Santos City vice mayor Shirlyn Bañas Nograles and Jersey City mayor Steven Fulop.

Born in General Santos City, Jinkee Capeña Jamora Pacquiao married Emmanuel “Manny” Dapidran Pacquiao Sr. in 1999. He graduated from Saavedra Saway Elementary School in General Santos City.
On June 11, 2016, Jezza Mae Lim represented General Santos City at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 45 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.
On March 18, 2018, Janette Roanne Sturm represented General Santos City at Binibining Pilipinas 2018 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. She was unplaced.
