In 1730, Augustinian missionaries in the Philippines founded a municipality called Opon. On June 17, 1961, it became a city and was renamed Lapu-Lapu.

The city was named after Lapulapu, the chieftain who led the Filipino warriors who defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan on the island of Mactan in Cebu, Philippines on April 27, 1521. The island is now divided into the city of Lapu-Lapu and the municipality of Cordova, Cebu.

Born in Lapu-Lapu, Junard “Ahong” Quirante Chan was a councilor in the city from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2010. He turned 50 on September 8, 2018 and will assume office as the mayor of the city on June 30, 2019.
