Lucena is the only independent city in the Calabarzon region of the Philippines. The region has five provinces namely Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal.
While Lucena is geographically located in Quezon, the city is independent from the province. The city is home to Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, which was established as Luzonian Colleges on February 11, 1947.
On July 1, 1991, Lucena was officially recognized as a highly urbanized city. It was named after Father Mariano Granja, a Spanish friar from Lucena, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain.
