Mandaue is geographically located on the coastal region of Cebu, Philippines but is independent from the province. The city has a total area of 34.87 square kilometers.
On August 30, 1969, Mandaue became a chartered city. It was recognized as a highly urbanized city on February 15, 1991 and it became a lone legislative district on April 5, 2019.

Established in 1973, Cebu Doctors’ College was established in Mandaue. In 2005, it was renamed Cebu Doctors’ University.
On May 11, 2014, Hannah Marie Caayon represented Mandaue at Miss Philippines Earth 2014 and competed against 48 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.
On April 30, 2017, Elizabeth Durado Clenci represented Mandaue at Binibining Pilipinas 2017 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She ranked fourth and was crowned Bb. Pilipinas Grand International 2017.
On October 25, 2017, Clenci represented the Philippines at Miss Grand International 2017 and competed against 76 other candidates at the Vinpearl Convention Center in Phú Quốc, Vietnam. She was second runner-up to María José Lora of Peru.
