Naga is the only independent city in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. The region has six provinces namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate and Sorsogon.

La Ciudad de Nueva Caceres was founded in 1575 and renamed Naga in 1919. It is geographically located in Camarines Sur but independent from the province, which has five congressional districts.
From June 30, 2013 to June 30, 2016, Naga native Maria Leonor “Leni” Gerona Robredo served as the congresswoman of the third district of Camarines Sur, which includes Naga and the municipalities of Bombon, Calabanga, Camaligan, Canaman, Magarao, Ocampo and Pili. On June 30, 2016, she assumed office as the vice president of the Philippines.
On December 7, 2008, Lizl Camille Rosoles represented Naga at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2008 and competed against 22 other candidates in Puerto Princesa, Philippines. She finished in the Top 10.
On June 11, 2016, Andrea Delgado represented Naga at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 45 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.
