Puerto Princesa is the only independent city in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines. The region has five provinces namely Marinduque, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan and Romblon.
Founded as a settlement on March 4, 1872, Puerto Princesa became a city on January 1, 1970 and was recognized as a highly urbanized city on July 21, 2007. It is geographically located in Palawan but independent from the province.

On July 11, 2016, Imelda Bautista Schweighart represented Puerto Princesa at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 45 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She won the title.
On July 15, 2017, Sadrine Stoelzaed represented Puerto Princesa at Miss Philippines Earth 2017 and competed against 39 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila. She was unplaced.
On March 18, 2018, Samantha Mae Adaliga Bernardo represented Puerto Princesa at Binibining Pilipinas 2018 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. She ranked eighth and was named the second runner-up.
