Tacloban is geographically located in Leyte, Philippines but the city is independent from the province, which has 40 municipalities. The city still serves as the capital of the province.
There are several universities in Tacloban including Eastern Visayas State University, Jose Rene E. (JE) Mondejar Foundation College, Leyte Normal University and the Liceo del Verbo Divino. The University of the Philippines has a campus in the city, as well.

Since 1987, Tacloban has been part of the first congressional district of Leyte along with the municipalities of Alangalang, Babatngon, Palo, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Tanauan and Tolosa. Since June 30, 2019, Ferdinand Martin Gomez Romualdez has been the congressman of the district.
In 1999, Romualdez married Cebu City, Philippines native Yedda Marie Mendoza Kittilsvedt Romualdez. On March 24, 1996, she represented the city at Binibining Pilipinas 1996, competed against 35 other candidates at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines, ranked third and was crowned Bb. Pilipinas International 1996.
On October 26, 1996, Yedda represented the Philippines at Miss International 1996 and competed against 47 other candidates at the Kanazawa Theater in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. She finished in the Top 15.
On April 30, 2017, Ana Patricia Asturias represented Tacloban at Bb. Pilipinas 2017 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. She was unplaced.
