Pio Valenzuela was born in Polo, a territorial enclave in Meycauayan, Bulacan, Philippines. He served as the 10th governor of the province from 1921 to 1925.
On July 21, 1960, Philippines’ eighth president Carlos P. Garcia signed an executive order that divided Polo into two. Its northern barangays formed a town called Polo and the southern barangays formed a town called Valenzuela.
On September 11, 1963, Philippines’ ninth president Diosdado Macapagal Sr. signed an executive order reuniting the two towns as a municipality called Valenzuela. On November 7, 1975, jurisdiction over Valenzuela was moved from Bulacan to Metro Manila, Philippines.
On February 14, 1998, Philippines’ 12th president Fidel V. Ramos signed a law that converted the municipality of Valenzuela into a highly urbanized chartered city. On December 30, 1998, it became the 12th city to be admitted in Metro Manila.

On March 19, 2005, Ameurfina Lim Koc represented Valenzuela at Binibining Pilipinas 2005 and competed against 22 other candidates at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila. She was unplaced.
On August 12, 2012, Dale Ivory Lee represented Valenzuela at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 and competed against 29 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Diliman, Quezon City. She finished in the Top 10.
On August 16, 2014, Maria Jessica Oribe represented Valenzuela at Miss Grand Philippines 2014 and competed against 16 other candidates at GT-Toyota Asian Cultural Center in Quezon City. She finished in the Top 10.
