Eddie Garcia, 90, was in a coma in the morning of June 8, 2018 after reportedly suffering from intense heat while on the set of “Rosang Agimat” in Katuparan, Tondo, Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines. The Filipino veteran actor was rushed to Mary Johnston Hospital in Tondo.
In the afternoon of the same day, Garcia reportedly woke up from coma. He was transferred to Makati Medical Center in Legazpi Village, Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines where he is currently recovering.
Reports claim that Garcia collapsed while taping for “Rosang Agimat.” It has yet to be confirmed whether he suffered heat exhaustion or he had another illness.
Heat exhaustion is common and preventable. But when untreated, it can progress to heatstroke, which involves central nervous system dysfunctions such as delirium and coma, according to “Management of Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion” by James L. Glazer, M.D.
Born in Sorsogon, Philippines on May 2, 1929, Garcia is one of the oldest Filipino actors who are currently active both on small and big screens. He is the only person who won Best Actor, Best Support Actor and Best Director in the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards.
From 2016 to 2019, Garcia played Don Emilio Syquía/Gustavo Torralba in “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano” on ABS-CBN. His next TV show will be “Rosang Agimat” on GMA Network.
“Rosang Agimat” is directed by Toto Natividad, who used to be one of the directors of “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano.” Joining Garcia in the cast of “Rosang Agimat” are Gil Cuerva, Kristoffer Martin, Jeric Gonzales, Celia Rodriguez, Chanda Romero, Luz Valdez, Aubrey Miles, Tonton Gutierrez, Victor Neri, Roi Vinzon, Betong Sumaya, Gabbi Garcia and Thea Tolentino.
Before “FPJ’s Ang Probinsiyano” and “Rosang Agimat,” Eddie starred in the GMA series “Little Nanay.” He played Don Miguel “Migz/G Pop” Vallejo in “Little Nanay” from 2015 to 2016.
On the big screen, Eddie’s most recent project was “Rainbow’s Sunset,” which was directed by Joel Lamangan. Released in 2018, the Filipino family drama LGBT-themed film also starred Tony Mabesa, Gloria Romero, Tirso Cruz III, Aiko Melendez and Sunshine Dizon.
