For the second time, Vickie Ruston, 27, of Negros Occidental, Philippines failed to win a Binibining Pilipinas crown. In her second attempt in the national beauty pageant of the Philippines, she again made it to the Top 15 but was not able to deliver a performance in the question and answer portion the way she wanted to.
“Nasasayangan ako kasi I know na kung ano ang sasabihin ko pero may nag-distract sa akin sa audience,” (I feel frustrated because I already knew what to say but there was someone in the audience who distracted me) Rushton told ABS-CBN News. “Doon ako nawala. May tumayo at nag-make face.” (That was when I got lost. Someone stood and made face.)
Hosted by Richard Gutierrez, Anne Curtis and Nicole Cordoves, the Bb. Pilipinas 2019 coronation night took place at Smart Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines on June 9, 2019. Quezon City mayor-elect Joy Belmonte served as the chairman of the board of judges.
The other judges were actors Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz, James Reid, Daniel Padilla and Nadine Lustre, basketball player Christian Standhardinger, Grab Philippines president Brian Cu, president of Asia at Alorica Inc. Rainerio Borja, ABS-CBN vice president for television Bobby Barrero, Ambassador of Italy to the Philippines Giorgio Guglielmino and Ambassador of Spain to the Philippines Jorge Moragas. It was Padilla who asked Rushton in the question and answer portion.
“Why is mental health as important as physical health?” Padilla asked. Rushton answered, “Mental health is as important as physical health because it is, because of our inner being.”
“Being, having self-love is important and as a woman… as a woman, I can inspire and empower the people to take care of themselves, to take care of their mind as well as their health because they are, they will be as effective… Sorry… and it takes an em-” Rushton was cut by the bell. She was not able to wrap up her answer with the 30-second period given to each contestant in the question and answer portion.
Rushton emphasized that she really knew how to answer the question because she had prepared for the question and answer portion somehow. Even before joining beauty pageants, she has been working with groups dedicated to Down Syndrome awareness as she has a brother with the genetic disorder.
