For the second time, Filipino-Chinese actor Timothy Lawrence Yap, 27, is starring in a film directed by Joel Lamangan, 66. In a one-on-one interview at the press conference for “Because I Love You” on June 7, 2019, the actor shared to me his thoughts on the veteran director.

Lamangan is known for being strict when it comes to dealing with his actors. Such strictness has been paying off since he started his career in directing as manifested in his almost 30 awards as a film director including the Golden Pyramid for his film “The Flor Contemplacion Story” at the 1995 Cairo International Film Festival, Best Director for his film “Felix Manalo” at the 2016 FAMAS Awards and Best Director for his film “Rainbow’s Sunset” at the 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival.

Moreover, Lamangan does practice what he preaches as he himself is a serious actor. He recently won Best Supporting Actor at the 2019 Gawad Urian Awards for his performance in “School Service.”

“He is very, very versatile like kung lokohan, lokohan (if it’s joke time, it’s joke time),” Yap said of Lamangan. “Pero kung serious siya, naku, good luck. Good luck talaga.” (But if he is serious, well, good luck. Good luck, really.”

In 2016, Yap starred in several films including “The Thing Called Tangana,” in which he played Huge, the husband of Angeline Quinto’s character Shirley. It was directed by Lamangan and written by Senedy Que based on the story of Roselle Y. Monteverde and Manny Valera.

Yap is returning to the big screen with “Because I Love You,” which was written by Charlotte Dianco and directed by Lamangan. It was based on a Wattpad story by the screenwriter herself.

In “Because I Love You,” Yap plays Ford, one of the best friends of the lead male character Rael, played by David Licauco. According to Yap, he is just like his character in the movie, who is a funny guy and the light of the party in the group.

Produced by ALV Films, “Because I Love You” hits Philippine theaters on June 26, 2019. Meanwhile, watch my complete interview with Yap here:
