Training out of Roufusport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States, Gerald “GM3” Meerschaert III, 31, was one of the winners at “UFC on ESPN 5.” It was his third victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship not including his wins in “The Ultimate Fighter.”
Born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA on December 18, 1987, Meerschaert is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. As a mixed martial artist, he has been competing professionally since 2007.
“UFC on ESPN 5” marked Meerschaert’s sixth UFC outing. The first two opponents he defeated in the promotion were Joe “Capo” Gigliotti, 25, of Arizona, USA and Ryan James, 37, of British Columbia, Canada.
Featuring 12 MMA bouts, “UFC on ESPN 5” took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, United States on August 3, 2019. In the ninth bout of the evening, Meerschaert competed in the middleweight division against Trevin “The Problem” Giles, 26, of Houston, Texas, USA with Herb Dean as the referee.
Dean put a stop to the middleweight contest after 1 minute and 49 seconds in the third round. Meerschaert submitted Giles via guillotine choke.
It was a redemptive win for Meerschaert who was coming out of two consecutive losses. The Roufusport athlete was submitted by Jack “The Joker” Hermansson, 31, of Oslo, Norway on December 15, 2018 and lost to Kevin “Trail Blazer” Holland, 26, of Texas via split decision on March 30, 2019.
“It feels amazing to get the win and the finish,” Meerschaert said in his post-fight interview. “I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face but I felt I won my last fight. Again, it’s my job to finish and I didn’t. In that way I lost last time.”
Winning at “UFC on ESPN 5” improved Meerschaert’s professional MMA record to 30 wins and 11 losses. On the other hand, Giles now has 11 wins and 2 losses.
Including the U.S., 11 countries were represented at “UFC on ESPN 2.” The others were Afghanistan, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, Poland, Serbia and South Korea.
