Undokai Fiesta

The Japan Foundation, Manila, partnered with Malay Elementary School in Malay, Aklan, Philippines. The foundation will be holding the traditional Japanese-Filipino sports day event Undokai Fiesta in the school on August 23, 2019.

Malay is home to Boracay, a small island known for its beaches that have received awards from many travel publications and agencies. The other tourist attractions in the municipality are the Naasug Point, the Pangihan Cave, the Nabaoy River, the Nagata Falls, the Agnaga Mini Falls and the Malay Ecological Park.

Two guest athletes namely Edwin Villanueva and Yuri Fukuda will deliver talks at the Undokai Fiesta in Malay. They will share their personal stories as athletes and hopefully inspire the students to gain an understanding and enthusiasm for teamwork, discipline and physical fitness.

Villanueva is a member of the Philippine Paralympic swimming team. Fukuda is a Japanese volleyball player for Petron Blaze Spikers.

Undokai is held in the fall of every year in Japan. It is composed of different sports and physical activities, emphasizing discipline and skill.

The Undokai Fiesta is a marriage of two traditions. The whole school community can experience how the Japanese celebrate their sports day while also doing activities similar to a Philippine fiesta.

Aligned with the core concepts of the Summer Paralympic 2020, the Undokai Fiesta will include the participation of elementary school students and students with special needs. The 2020 Summer Paralympics, which is governed by the International Paralympic Committee, will take place in Tokyo, Japan from August 25, 2010 to September 6, 2020.
