
Narendra Modi, 68, recently visited Bhutan for the second time. The prime minister of India arrived in the landlocked country on August 17, 2019.
During the visit, Modi met with Bhutan’s prime minister Lotay Tshering, 50. On August 18, 2019, the Indian leader took to Twitter to express his gratitude to the Bhutanese people.
Modi and Tshering had a bilateral meeting in Gyalyong Tshogkhang in Bhutan’s capital Thimphu. The two leaders exchanged thoughts on strengthening the bond between their respective countries.
Moreover, Modi and Tsering went to the Royal University of Bhutan in Thimphu where they met parliamentarians and students. The Indian leader talked about the strong relationship between India and Bhutan and shared a secret about his book “Exam Warriors.”
While in Thimphu, Modi attended a cultural program at the Tashichhoedzong Palace. He also went to the National Memorial Chorten, a revered monument honoring Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the late Third Druk Gyalpo.
Aside from Tsering, Modi was welcomed by Bhutanese royalties. The Indian leader met with Bhutanese king Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, 39, and Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the fourth Druk Gyalpo.
After concluding a two-day visit to Bhutan, Modi left for Delhi, India from Paro International Airport. Tshering was accompanied by senior government officials send the Indian prime minister off at the sole international airport of Bhutan.
Both India and Bhutan are in South Asia. The other countries in the region are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
As the only carbon-negative country in the world, Bhutan aims to reach zero net greenhouse gas admission and to produce zero waste. The country is also known for for the diversity of its wildlife and for pioneering the concept of gross national happiness.
Among the tourist attractions in Bhutan are the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Punakha Dzong, the Zuri Dzong Trek, the Uma Paro Hotel and the Gangtey Valley. The country is home to actor Kelly Dorji, 48, musician Lama Gyurme, 70, footballers Wangay Dorji, 45, Passang Tshering, 36, Sangay Khandu, 33, Kinley Wangchuk, 33, Dawa Gyeltshen, 33, Sonam Tenzin, 32, Sonam Tobgay, 29, Chimi Dorji, 25, Thinley Dorji, 24, and Chencho Gyeltshen, 23, among others.
