Evolve MMA’s Demetrious Johnson is ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Champion, decisions Danny Kingad at ‘ONE: Century 世紀’ in Japan

ONE Championship recently concluded its inaugural ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix at “ONE: Century 世紀” in Tokyo, Japan. The winner was reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 20, who is training out of training out of AMC Pankration in Kirkland, Washington, USA and Evolve MMA in Singapore.

“ONE: Century 世紀” was the second ONE Championship event held in Japan and the martial arts organization’s 100th live event. The combat sports event had two parts with 11 bouts each.

Featuring mixed martial arts, Muay Thai and kickboxing matches, “ONE: Century 世紀” took place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on October 12, 2019. In the co-main event of the first part, Johnson and Danny “The King” Kingad, 24, of the Philippines competed in the inaugural ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix final with Olivier Coste as the referee.

In the first round, Johnson was relentless with his takedowns, showcasing his chain wrestling skills to constantly bring Kingad to the mat. The Filipino fighter tried his best to defend against his American opponent’s advances but the later slowly started to dominate.

In the second round, Johnson continued with his amazing work from top, attacking with various submissions from different control positions. In the third round, he continued to dominate.

After three five-minute rounds, the championship bout was left in the hands of the judges and in the end, Coste raised the hand of Johnson. The Evolve MMA and AMC Pankration was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

The victory improved Johnson’s professional MMA record to 30 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw. Kingad now has 13 wins and 2 losses.


Including the U.S. and the Philippines, a total of 18 countries were represented in the two parts of “ONE: Century 世紀.” The others were Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey and Thailand.

Johnson was one of the two fighters who represented the U.S. while Kingad was one of the five representatives of the Philippines. Watch the highlights of “ONE: Century 世紀” part 1 here:
