Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi, 36, of Tokyo, Japan was one of the winners at “ONE: Century 世紀” in Tokyo. It was the Japanese mixed martial artist’s sixth victory in ONE Championship.
“ONE: Century 世紀” was the second ONE Championship event held in Japan and marked the martial arts organization’s 100th live event. The combat sports event had two parts with 11 bouts each.
Featuring mixed martial arts, Muay Thai and kickboxing matches, “ONE: Century 世紀” took place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on October 12, 2019. The fifth bout of the second part was a rematch between Yamaguchi fought Jenny “Lady GoGo” Huang, 28, of Taipei, Taiwan.
Huang and Yamaguchi competed in an MMA bout in the women’s atomweight division. Yoshinori Umeki served as the referee.
Yamaguchi put her high-level grappling on full display as she was able to take Huang down with ease. The Taiwanese contender held her own thanks to her striking.
After three five-minute rounds, the atomweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Umeki raised the hand of Yamaguchi, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision, marking the second time she defeated Huang.
The Japanese MMA veteran is now riding a four-bout winning streak. In her post-fight interview in the cage, she expressed her interest and challenging the reigning ONE Atomweight World Championship again.
Competing professionally since 2007, Yamaguchi joined ONE Championship in 2016. Aside from Huang, the other opponents the Japanese fighter defeated in the promotion were Gina Iniong, Jomary Torres, Ksenia Lachkova and Laura Balin.
Winning at “ONE: Century 世紀” improved the professional MMA record of Yamaguchi to 21 wins, 11 losses and 1 draw. On the other hand, Huang now has 5 wins and 5 losses.
Including Japan and Taiwan, 18 countries were represented in the two parts of “ONE: Century 世紀.” The others were Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey and the United States.
Yamaguchi was one of the 12 fighters who represented Japan. Huang solely represented Taiwan.
