Carlos Edriel Yulo, 19, of the Philippines earned the gold medal in men’s artistic gymnastics in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. It is the 30th edition of the biennial regional multi-sport event, which is hosted by the Philippines.
The artistic gymnastics contest of the SEA Games 2019 took place at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Malate, Manila, Philippines on December 1, 2019. The judges gave Yulo a score of 14.650 in the floor exercise, 13.600 both in the pommel horse and in the rings, 14.55 in the vault, 14.4 in the parallel bars and 13.75 in the horizontal bars.
In total, Yulo earned a score of 84.800 to win the gold medal. Both representing Vietnam, silver medalist Dinh Phuong Thanh and bronze medalist Le Thanh Tung earned a score of 82.360 and 81.700, respectively.
After the win, Yulo took to Twitter to give a message to his fellow Filipinos. He said it was an honor to be a part of the SEA Games 2019 and he asked his countrymen to continue supporting other Filipino athletes.
Born on February 16, 2000 in Manila, Yulo grew up watching Filipino gymnasts train and compete at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. He was only 7 years old when he became part of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines program.
When Yulo was young, the Philippine Sports Commission provided him with free gymnastics training at the Rizal Memorial Complex. He started competing in 2008.
In 2013, Yulo entered Teikyo University in Itabashi, Tokyo where he pursued a degree in Literature. In 2017, he won gold in the parallel bars at the 14th Junior Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
In 2018, Yulo made his debut in the Gymnastics World Cup. In the same year, he finished seventh in the final of the 2018 Asian Games.
At age 18, Yulo competed 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, which took place in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany from October 4-13, 2019. He won gold in the floor exercise finals making his the first ever Filipino gymnast to win gold at a world gymnastics championship.
After advancing to the final round of the all-around event of the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Yulo will represent the Philippines at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which will be held at the Olympic Gymnastic Centre of Tokyo Bay in Tokyo, Japan from July 25, 2019 to August 9, 2020.
