The Republic of Cuba is a Caribbean country in North America. The country is located at the north of the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, the east of the Yucatán Peninsula, west of Hispaniola and south of both Florida, United States and the Bahamas.
On December 10, 1898, Spain handed over Cuba to the U.S. On May 20, 1902, Cuba became a republic and declared its independence from the U.S.
On October 24, 1945, Cuba was admitted to the United Nations. The country’s incumbent president Miguel Díaz-Canel, 59, assumed office on October 10, 2019.
