The state of Israel declared its independence from the British Empire on May 14, 1948. The country was admitted to the United Nations on May 11, 1949.
Tel Aviv is Israel’s economic and technological center while Jerusalem is the country’s proclaimed capital and seat of government. Located in Western Asia, the country shares borders with Lebanon to the north, Jordan to the east, Syria to the northeast, the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to the east and west, respectively, and Egypt to the southwest.
Israel’s incumbent and ninth prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 69, assumed office on March 31, 2009. The country’s incumbent and 10th president Reuven Rivlin, 80, assumed office on July 24, 2014.
