Pieter “The Archangel” Buist, 31, of the Netherlands is the most qualified ONE Championship athlete to challenge Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 21, Singapore. The latter has been reigning as the ONE Lightweight World Champion since May 17, 2019.
On January 31, 2020, Buist fought former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 35, of the Philippines in the co-main event of “ONE: Fire and Fury” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. The Dutch contender defeated the Filipino former champion via split decision.
Buist is a Florijn College Breda alum. Training out of Combat Brothers in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands, the Dutch MMA fighter has been competing professionally since 2012.
In 2019, Buist joined ONE Championship and defeated two opponents. He knocked out Kota “Genjin” Shimoishi, 32, of Japan at “ONE: Warriors of Light” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand and defeated Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso, 29, of Australia via unanimous decision at “ONE: Dawn of Valor” at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“ONE: Fire and Fury” marked the third ONE Championship bout of Buist. It was also his first MMA fight in the Philippines.
ONE Championship should bring back Buist at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on May 29, 2020 for “ONE: Code of Honor.” Reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 42, of the Philippines is set to defend his belt from a yet-to-be-announced challenger at its main event, as he announced at “ONE: Fire and Fury.”
It looks like the SM Mall of Asia Arena is a lucky venue for Buist. He should be featured in the co-main event of “ONE: Code of Honor” and challenge the reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion.
The last time Lee competed was on October 12, 2019. He became the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Champion by defeating Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev, 23, of Turkey via unanimous decision at “ONE: Century 世紀” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
Lee currently holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 13 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, beating Folayang improved the record of Buist to 15 win and 4 losses.
