“Unstopabble” Angela Lee, 23, of Singapore has been reigning as the ONE Atomweight World Champion since May 6, 2016. One of the ONE Championship athletes eager to challenge her is Denice “The Menace Fairtex” Zamboanga, 22, of the Philippines.
Training out of Fairtex Training Center in Pattaya, Thailand, Zamboanga is one of the 15 undefeated mixed martial artists currently signed with ONE Championship. She is very new to the Singapore-based martial arts promotion but she is ready to earn a title shot.
On February 28, 2020, Zamboanga will face Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi, 36, of Japan at “ONE: King of the Jungle,” a closed-door event to be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, in an MMA match in the women’s strawweight division. The Fairtex Gym representative took the bout on short notice and it will be her second ONE Championship bout.
“I was in the Philippines when Fairtex called me about it and told me that I had that day to think about it,” Zamboanga shared. “I said okay and took it. It was the off-season for me, spending time with my family after being away for quite a while and it was the holidays.”
“A few days later, I was on the plane back to get ready for training again,” Zamboanga continued. “I believe that this match could be a stepping stone to get me closer to a World Title shot. If I lost, it would be against a huge contender and if I win, the rewards could be enormous.”
“I have everything to gain and nothing to lose and I’m not planning to lose in any way,” the Filipino undefeated MMA fighter added. “If I can beat Mei, I will call out Angela Lee.”
Lee is training out of Evolve MMA in Singapore and United MMA in Hawaii, United States. She defeated Yamaguchi in ONE Championship twice at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Both via unanimous decision, Yamaguchi lost to Lee at “ONE: Ascent to Power” on May 6, 2016 and at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” on May 18, 2018.
Yamaguchi was originally set to face Meng Bo, 23, of China at “ONE: King of the Jungle” but the latter was replaced by Zamboanga. Here is a clip featuring the Filipino contender, who currently holds a professional MMA record of 6 wins and 0 loss:
