While the Republic of Suriname is located on the northeastern Atlantic coast of South America, the country is a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member and is considered to be a culturally Caribbean country. It is the only sovereign nation outside Europe where Dutch is spoken by most of its citizens.
In 1954, Suriname became one of the Kingdom of the Netherlands’s constituent countries but on November 25, 1975, the former left the latter to become an independent state. The two countries still maintain a close relationship economically, diplomatically and culturally.
Chan Santokhi, 61, is the incumbent and 10th president of Suriname. He assumed office on July 16, 2020.
