Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. biography: 13 things about US military’s 1st black service chief

General Charles Q. Brown Jr. was confirmed as the chief of staff of the United States Air Force on June 9, 2020. It made him the first ever African-American service chief in the U.S. military.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, USA in 1962, Brown earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock in 1984. He became a second lieutenant on February 28, 1985, a first lieutenant on February 28, 1987, a captain on February 28, 1989, a major on August 1, 1996 and Lieutenant Colonel on July 1, 1999.
