Dagestan, Russia’s Askar Askarov earns 2nd UFC win at ‘UFC Fight Night 172’ on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Askar “Bullet” Askarov, 27, of Khasavyurt, Dagestan, Russia earned his second victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The undefeated Dagestani mixed martial artist was one of the “UFC Fight Night 172” winners.

Also called “UFC on ESPN+ 30,” “UFC Fight Night 172” featured 12 MMA matches on the UFC Fight Island on Yas Island on July 19, 2020 in the UAE or July 18, 2020 in the U.S. Askarov fought Alexandre “The Cannibal” Pantoja, 30, of Arraial do Cabo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the flyweight in the eighth bout, which was refereed by Marc Goddard.

After three five-minute rounds, the flyweight contest was left in the hands of the three judges, who all scored it 29-28 all in favor of the fighter in the blue corner. In the end, Goddard raised the hand of Askarov, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

This is the second time Askarov won a professional MMA bout via unanimous decision. Winning at “UFC Fight Night 172” improved the Dagestani MMA fighter’s professional MMA record to 12 wins, 0 loss and 1 draw.

Fighting professionally since 2013, Askarov joined the UFC in 2019. The first opponent he defeated in the promotion was Tim Elliott.

On the other hand, Pantoja made his UFC debut in 2017. The Brazilian MMA fighter now has 22 wins and 5 losses.


“UFC Fight Night 172” was the third UFC event to take place on the UFC Fight Island during the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. A total and 17 countries were represented namely Armenia, Brazil, Canada, the DR Congo, England, Georgia, Iraq, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, the U.S. and Wales.

Panjoja was one of the six fighters who represented Brazil. Askarov was one of the three representatives of Russia.

Newly crowned UFC Flyweight Champion Deiveson “Deus da Guerra” Figueiredo, 32, of Soure, Para, Brazil and Ariane “Queen of Violence” Lipski, 26, of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil won the Performances of the Night bonuses. The lightweight bout between Rafael “Ataman” Fiziev, 27, of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and Marc “Bonecrusher” Diakiese, 27, of the DR Congo and England was declared the Fight of the Night.
