Daniel Jay Cameron is an African-American politician and attorney from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, United States. He is an alumnus of the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky.

As the 51st attorney general of Kentucky, Cameron announced the grand jury’s decision on Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison and Myles Cosgrove on September 23, 2020. On March 13, 2020, the Louisville Metro Police Department officers raided African-American emergency room technician Breonna Taylor‘s apartment in Louisville, which led to her death.

“My job as the special prosecutor in this case was to put emotions aside and investigate the facts to determine if criminal violations of state law resulted in the loss of Miss Taylor’s life,” the Louisville Courier Journal quoted Cameron as saying. Here are 13 more facts about him:

1. He was born in Elizabethtown. His father was a local coffee shop owner and his mother was a a professor at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in Elizabethtown.
2. He went to John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown. He won a prize scholarship named in honor of Kentucky’s senator Mitch McConnell to attend the University of Louisville.
3. As a McConnell Scholar, he entered the University of Louisville in 2004 and earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 2008. From 2005 to 2006, he played for the university’s football team, the Louisville Cardinals.
4. He attended the Brandeis School of Law of the University of Louisville where he was the Student Bar Association president. In 2011, he earned his Juris Doctor.
5. From September 2011 to August 2013, he clerked for Federal District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove in the Eastern District of Kentucky Federal District Court.
6. From September 2013 to February 2015, he worked for Stites and Harbison particularly in the business litigation practice area.
7. From March 2015 to June 2017, he served as legal counsel to McConnell, the senate majority leader, in Washington, D.C., USA.
8. In June 2017, he joined the law firm Frost Brown Todd in Louisville as a senior associate.
9. On January 21, 2019, he announced that he was running for attorney general of Kentucky. After defeating Wil Schroder in the Republican primary, he was endorsed by Donald Trump.
10. In the general election in November 2019, he defeated Greg Stumbo and became Kentucky’s first African-American attorney general. He was also the state’s first independently elected statewide officer, second African-American statewide officer and first Republican attorney general since Eldon S. Dummit, who served from 1944 to 1948.
11. He was 34 years old when he became the acting attorney general of Kentucky on December 17, 2019 following Andy Beshear‘s resignation. He officially assumed office on January 6, 2020.
