James Dale Reed is a white man and a gun enthusiast from Maryland, United States. Amid the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, he made headlines after threatening Joe Biden and Kamala Harris through a letter left on a neighbor’s doorstep.

Reed initially denied writing the letter but eventually confessed to the U.S. Secret Service and Frederick Police Department, which launched an investigation. Here are 10 things about him:

1. He is a resident of Redwood Avenue, Frederick, Maryland.
2. He went to Frederick High School in Frederick.
3. In 2004, he and Lisa M. Reed got married.
4. On October 3, 2020, he wrote a letter threatening Biden and Harris because he was upset at the political situation.
5. In the early morning of October 4, 2020, he drove to Kline Boulevard in Frederick and stopped at the first house he saw with multiple democratic political signs, which belonged to Mark Posthuma and his wife. Wearing a beanie hat, gloves and a military-like windbreaker, he left a letter threatening Biden and Harris on the doorstep of the house at around 4:26 a.m. A video of the incident was captured by a doorbell camera.
6. On October 9, 2020, an anonymous tip to the Frederick Police Department provided information that caused investigators to focus on him.
7. When authorities interviewed him on October 13, 2020, he denied leaving a threatening letter on a neighbor’s doorstep although he strongly resembled the man in the video of the incident.
8.  On October 15, 2020, he consented and complied with investigators’ requests for elimination palm prints and a more extensive handwriting sample. He nodded his head when the investigators asked him again if he had written the threatening letter left on the doorstep of his neighbor. He told them that “this will happen” due to the political climate. He was arrested that day and was charged with the threat of mass violence and electoral operation offenses, which are all misdemeanor charges. He faces up to five year in prison if convicted in federal court.
9. He was 42 years old when he was arrested on October 15, 2020.
10. On October 19, 2020, he was held at the Frederick County Detention Center without bail. He waived his right to have a lawyer represent him during his initial appearance in Frederick District Court.
