Miss Universe Japan 2019 Ako Kamo of Kobe, Hyogo, Japan is an alumna of Obayashi Sacred Heart High School in Takarazuka, Hyogo and Kobe College in Nishinomiya, Hyogo. She also studied media production and performing arts at the Assumption College San Lorenzo in Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines.
On August 22, 2019, Kamo competed against 37 other Miss Universe Japan 2019 candidates at Yamano Beauty College in Yoyogi, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan and won the title. On October 20, 2020, she turned 23.
Miss Universe Japan 2020
On October 29, 2020, Kamo will crown her successor at the Yamano Hall in Shibuya. It is the 23rd edition of the national beauty pageant that selects Japan’s Miss Universe candidate.

Japan was represented in Miss Universe by the winner of Miss Japan from 1952 to 1995 and Miss Universe Japan since 1998. Hiroko Mima has been the national director since 2018.
Currently, Japan has 19 Miss Universe placements, including the coronation of Akiko Kojima in 1959 and Riyo Mori in 2007. The most recent one was in 2015 when Ariana Miyamoto finished in the Top 10.
On July 14, 2008, Mima represented Japan at Miss Universe 2008 and competed against 79 other candidates at the Crown Convention Centre in Nha Trang, Vietnam. She finished in the Top 15.
On December 8, 2019, Kamo represented Japan at Miss Universe 2019 and competed against 89 other candidates at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. She was unplaced.
