Cameron Smith, 27, of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia almost won the 2020 Masters Tournament. The Australian professional golfer tied for second in the 84th edition of the major professional golf championship.
With no in-person attendance due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the 2020 Masters Tournament was held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, USA from November 12-15, 2020. On November 15, 2020, Smith fired a seven-under 65 and became the first golfer in the history of the Masters Tournament to shoot multiple rounds of 65 or better in the same tournament.
With a score of 268, 20-under-par, Johnson was five strokes ahead of Smith and Im. The runners-up had a score of 273, 15-under-par.
Established on March 22, 1934, the Masters Tournament is traditionally held in the first week of April. The 2020 edition was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was Smith’s second Masters Tournament. When he made his debut in the tournament in 2016, he tied for 55th.
Cameron has been playing golf professionally since 2013. He was born in Brisbane on August 18, 1993 to Des Smith and Sharon Smith.
Des was a scratch-marker and club champion at Wantima Golf Club in Brisbane. It was him who introduced Cameron to golf, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Since 2004, Cameron has been coached and mentored by Grant Field, who became the head coach of Golf Queensland in March 2017. The former won the Handa Junior Masters in 2009, the Australian Boys’ Amateur, the Australian Amateur Stroke Play and the Victorian Junior Masters in 2011, the Australian Amateur Stroke Play again in 2012 and the Australian Amateur in 2013.
In 2014, Cameron moved from Brisbane to Jacksonville, Florida, United States where he lives with his girlfriend Jordan Ontiveros. After being cut in 2017 at The Open Championship, he finished 78th in 2018 and tied for 20th in 2019.
On January 12, 2020, Cameron won the 2020 Sony Open in Hawaii in a playoff, which marked his first individual victory on the PGA Tour. His runner-up was Brendan Steele of California, USA.
