The republic of Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Latvia and Lithuania to the northwest, Russia to the northeast and northeast and Ukraine to the south.

Belarus gained its independence from Russia on March 25, 1918. It declared state sovereignty on July 27, 1990 and gained its independence from the United Socialist Soviet Republic on August 25, 1991.

The incumbent president of Belarus is Alexander Lukashenko (Александр Лукашенко), who assumed office on July 20, 1994. On December 8, 1999, the Union State of Russia and Belarus was formed.
