Jonel Montales Nuezca, 46, a Filipino policeman who is a senior master sergeant, is the most hated man now in the Philippines. He was caught on tape fatally shooting his neighbors Sonya Rufino Gregorio, 52, and her son Frank Anthony “Anton” Gregorio, 25, in Purok 2, Barangay Cabayaoasan, Paniqui, Tarlac, Philippines.
At around 5:10 p.m. on December 20, 2020, the neighbors were having an altercation over improvised firecrackers called boga, which are used to make noise during New Year celebrations. Beside Nuezca was his daughter Elisha Aquino Nuezca, 13, who was taking a video using her cellphone.
Sonya was holding Anton, trying to stop her son from being violent. When he was arguing with Elisha, the latter yelled, “Just let go!”
The Gregorios and the Nuezcas have been having a conflict over land dispute and right of way for years. But on that particular day, the Nuezcas were disturbed by the noise Anton was making using boga.
“Siya ang i-let go mo hindi kami (You should be the one who should let him go not us,” Sonya told Elisha referring to Jonel. “Nandito kami sa bahay namin (We are in our house).”
“My father is a policeman!” Elisha yelled back. Sonya responded with a line from a K-pop song, mockingly singing, “I don’t ca-eh-eh-eh-eh-are!”
It was from “I Don’t Care,” a 2NE1 song released on July 1, 2009. One of the four members of the K-pop girl group was Sandara “Dara” Park, 36, a Korean singer and actress who lived in the Philippines for years.
“P****g ina mo! (F**k you!)” Jonel yelled at Sonya upon hearing her sing an “I Don’t Care” line and drew a 9 mm service firearm. “Gusto mo tapusin kita ngayon, ha? (You want me to finish you now?)”
Jonel then shot Sonya once and Anton twice. The police noticed that she was still alive while lying on the ground so he shot her again once before he and Elisha walked away like nothing happened.
Hailing from Paniqui, Nuezca is an active member of the Philippine National Police and is officially assigned at the Parañaque City Crime Laboratory in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines. He was off duty when he shot Sonya and her son.
At around 6:19 p.m. on December 20, 2020, Nuezca surrendered to the police station in Rosales, Pangasinan, Philippines where he was picked up. He is now in the custody of the Paniqui Municipal Police Station and has been charged with double murder.
