The Republic of the Gambia is situated on both sides of the lower reaches of the Gambia River. Except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean, the West African country is surrounded by Senegal.
On February 18, 1965, the Gambia achieved its independence from the United Kingdom. On September 30, 1989, the Gambia permanently withdrew from the Senegambia Confederation.
Adama Barrow, 55, is the incumbent and third president of the Gambia. He assumed office on January 19, 2017.
The Gambia is the smallest country within mainland Africa and is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Economic Community of West African States.
