Jamaica is an island country in North America. Situated in the Caribbean Sea, the country is the third largest island of the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean.
The indigenous Taíno peoples originally inhabited the island, which came under Spanish rule after the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. In 1655, England conquered the island and renamed it Jamaica.
On August 6, 1962, Jamaica achieved its independence from the United Kingdom. Politically, Jamaica is a Commonwealth realm with Elizabeth II as its queen represented by a governor general.
Patrick Allen, 70, the incumbent and sixth governor general of Jamaica, assumed office on February 26, 2009. Andrew Holness, 49, the country’s incumbent and ninth prime minister, assumed office on March 3, 2016.
