The Republic of the Marshall Islands is an island country in Oceania. Located near the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, the country shares maritime boundaries with Wake Island to the north, the Federated States of Micronesia to the west, Kiribati to the southeast and Nauru to the south.
The Marshall Islands was named after British explorer John Marshall. The country achieved its independence from the United States on May 1, 1979 and was admitted to the United Nations on September 17, 1991.
David Kabua, 69, is the incumbent and ninth president of the Marshall Islands. He assumed office on January 13, 2020.
