The United Mexican States is the world’s most populous Spanish-speaking country. It is a federation with 31 states including its capital Mexico City.
In 1521, the Spanish Empire conquered and colonized Mexico. In 1821, the latter became an independent nation state after successfully defeating the former in the Mexican War of Independence.
Located in the southern part of North America, Mexico is ecologically megadiverse and culturally and historically rich. It has 35 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites including the Historic Centre of Puebla, Sian Ka’an, the Rock Paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco, the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino, the Historic Fortified Town of Campeche, Luis Barragan House and Studio and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.
