The Sultanate of Oman is a country in Western Asia. The country shares maritime borders with Iran and Pakistan and land borders with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
Oman was established as a sultanate on August 9, 1970 and admitted to the United Nations on October 7, 1971. In 1981, the country became one of the six founding members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
On January 11, 2020, Haitham bin Tariq, 65, became the Sultan of Oman. On the same day, he assumed office as the country’s prime minister and minister of defense.
