The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe consists of two archipelagos around the two main islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. The island country is the second smallest sovereign state in Africa after Seychelles and a founding member state of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries.
On July 12, 1975, São Tomé and Príncipe achieved its independence from Portugal. In 2017, the country signed the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
Evaristo Carvalho, 79, is the incumbent and fourth president of São Tomé and Príncipe. He assumed office on September 3, 2016.
