The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia. Formerly called Ceylon, the country lies in the Indian Ocean and shares a maritime border with India and the Maldives.
In 1815, the British colonized Ceylon, which became a dominion when it proclaimed independence on February 4, 1948. On May 22, 1972, the dominion became a republic named Sri Lanka.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 71, is the incumbent and eight president of Sri Lanka. He assumed office on November 18, 2019.
