The Republic of Turkey was established on October 29, 1923. A transcontinental country, it is located mainly on the Anatolian peninsula in Western Asia with a smaller portion on the Balkan peninsula in Southeastern Europe.
Inhabited by diverse civilizations at various points in its history, Turkey is home to various ethnic groups including the Turks, the Kurds, the Arabs, the Laz and the Circassians. Its official language is Turkish and the other languages spoken in the country are Bosnian, Kabardian-Cherkess, Kurmanji, Laz, Syrian Arabic and Zaza.
Turkey is a charter member of the United Nations. The country used to be a parliamentary republic but it adopted a presidential system with a referendum in 2017, which came into effect in 2018 through a presidential election.
