Welsh and English are the official languages of Wales. Located in Europe, the country is bordered by the Bristol Channel to the south, the Irish Sea to the north and west and England to the east.
England, Wales and Scotland are collectively called Great Britain. The three countries and Northern Ireland are the constituent countries of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, also known as the United Kingdom or Britain.
At the Olympic Games, Welsh athletes compete as part of a Great Britain team but Wales has its own national teams at several international sporting events including the Commonwealth Games, the FIFA World Cup and Rugby World Cup. Rugby union is regarded as Welsh identity’s symbol and expression of national consciousness.
One of the unique things about Wales is the eisteddfod, a festival of Welsh literature, music and performance. It is one of the reason why the country is called the Land of Song.
