Dagestan’s Umar Nurmagomedov earns 1st UFC win, submits Sergey Morozov at ‘UFC Fight Island 8’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Umar Nurmagomedov, 24, of Kizilyurt, Dagestan, Russia has earned his first victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The undefeated Dagestani mixed martial artist was one of the winners at “UFC on ESPN 20,” which is also called “UFC Fight Island 8.”

Featuring 14 MMA matches, “UFC Fight Island 8” took place at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. In the second bout of the evening, Nurmagomedov fought Sergey Morozov, 31, of Aktobe, Kazakhstan in the bantamweight division.

Jason Herzog served as the referee. He put a stop to the bantamweight contest after 3 minutes and 39 seconds in the second round when Nurmagomedov submitted Morozov via rear-naked choke.

The spectacular finish earned Nurmagomedov the Performance of the Night bonus. Also winning the same bonus was Warlley Alves, 30, of Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Brazil knocked out Mounir “Sniper” Lazzez, 33, of Sfax, Tunisia in the welterweight division.

Winning at “UFC Fight Island 8” improved Nurmagomedov’s professional MMA record to 13 wins and 0 loss. It was also his UFC debut.

Morozov made his UFC debut at “UFC Fight Island 8,” as well. He now has 16 wins and 5 losses.

 

Nurmagomedov was born in Russia. He and former UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, 32, of Dagestan are cousins.

Khabib watch Umar’s UFC debut live on Yas Island. During the “UFC Fight Island 8” post-fight interview, Khabib served as Umar’s translator.

“It is going to be a little bit more easier for me because I already know the way I have to move but I have to focus,” Umar said via Khabib. “I have very hard work ahead but I’m excited about the future.”

When Khabib made his UFC debut on January 20, 2012, he submitted Kamal “The Prince of Persia” Shalorus, 43, of Iran via rear-naked choke in the third round. With 29 wins and 0 loss, the former UFC Lightweight Champion retired in 2020.

“He is very happy with this,” Khabib said of Umar. “It was not planned but he is very happy to choke his opponent like I did 9 years ago.”
