Mauricio Eduardo Johnson, 18, of Loleta, Humboldt County, California, United States has been arrested. He is accused of fatally shooting three people at a home on the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria Reservation in Humboldt County on February 10, 2021.
The victims were Nikki Dion Metcalf, 40, Margarett Lee Moon, 40, and Shelly Autumn Mae Moon, 16. They knew Johnson, who was a guest in their house, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal told the North Coast Journal.
“It’s a tragedy,” Honsal told the publication. “Our hearts go out to the Bear River community and the Moon family. It’s just an absolute tragedy.”
Aside from the three victims, two more people aged 13 and 11 were found inside the house. The two children were not harmed.
Johnson reportedly had a relationship with Shelly. He had been given permission to be inside residence at the rural Indian reservation prior to the shooting.
On February 11, 2021, Johnson was arrested in Utah while he was travelling to Indiana in a white Toyota Highlander. He was with his mother Melissa Sanchez Johnson and her friend Von Eric Keener, 46.
Prior to the arrest, Humboldt County Sheriff’s investigators determined two vehicles associated with Mauricio, which were located traveling in Tooele County, Utah, USA. One vehicle yielded and his mother was detained for questioning.
The second vehicle failed to yield, which led to a pursuit. It was disabled by a spike strip deployed by law enforcement and Mauricio and Keener were located in it.
While Mauricio was taken into custody on a warrant for murder, Keener was taken into custody on a parole warrant. They were booked into the Tooele County Jail.
Whether or not Keener and Melissa were involved in the homicides is still being investigation. The latter has yet to be charged.
