Did Eric Nelson try to paint Donald Williams II as angry black man at Derek Chauvin trial?

Donald Wynn Williams II was one of the witnesses who testified in the trial of Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd in the Hennepin County Courthouse in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, Untied States on March 31, 2021. It was the trial’s third day and Williams’ second day in court.

Eric Nelson represents Chauvin. The way the white lawyer questioned the African-American witness that day was criticized by observers, particularly African-Americans in Minnesota.

Nelson brought up an interview investigators had with Williams. Reading from a transcript of the interview, the lawyer said, “In that statement, you said that, ‘Like, I really wanted to beat the shit out of the police officers.'”

“You said that,” Nelson continued. Williams replied, “Yeah, that’s what I felt.”

“So again, Sir, it’s fair to say that you grew angrier and angrier,” Nelson said. Williams replied, “No, you can’t paint me out as angry.”

“I would say I was in a position where I had to be controlled,” Williams continued. “(It was) controlled professionalism. I wasn’t angry.”

Chauvin’s lawyer interrupted Williams. The former objected on the grounds that the latter was being nonresponsive.

“Anytime a black man says he’s sick and tired, anytime a black man opens up his mouth to say what he sees, they label him an angry black man,” The Star Tribune quoted John Thompson as saying. Representing District 67A, he is a Minnesota House of Representatives member who assumed office on January 5, 2021.

Williams was the third witness who testified in court before Judge Peter Cahill during the first day of Chauvin’s murder trial on March 29, 2021. The former was one of the bystanders who witnessed how then Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds outside Cup Foods on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020.

Dubbed D Will Ill, Williams is a professional mixed martial artist. He currently holds a professional MMA record of 6 wins and 6 losses.
