Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, 37, of Deerfield Beach, Broward County, Florida, United States made his successful Bellator MMA debut at “Bellator 258” in Montville, New London County, Connecticut, USA. After his win, the New Canaan Police Department arrested the professional mixed martial artist.
Featuring 11 matches, “Bellator 258” took place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Montville on May 7, 2021. In the co-main event of the evening, Johnson knocked out Jose Augusto “Gugu” Azevedo Barros, 29, of Paulo Afonso, Bahia, Brazil.
At 11:00 p.m. that evening, hours after “Bellator 258,” New Canaan Police Department officers detained Johnson at the Mohegan Sun Arena. He is accused of illegally obtaining a credit card to purchase a round-trip airline ticket from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Newark, New Jersey, USA on November 9, 2019.
The owner of the credit card is a resident of Fairfield County, Connecticut. Johnson was charged with identify theft and cited for spending less than $500 on a revoked payment card.
The MMA fighter from Deerfield Beach has been released on $500 bond. He is expected to appear in court on June 8, 2021.
This is not the first time Johnson was arrested. Accused of having an altercation with a former girlfriend on June 27, 2009, he pleaded nolo contendere after being arrested for domestic violence in July 2009 and he was sentenced to a three-year probation.
Born in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia, USA, Johnson attended Lassen College in Susanville, Lassen County, California, USA on a wrestling scholarship. He made his professional MMA debut on August 18, 2006 made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut on June 12, 2007.
In 2012, Johnson allegedly knocked out two of a woman’s teeth. The woman did not press charges but when the UFC discovered the incident in September 2014, the promotion suspended him indefinitely.
On November 6, 2014, the suspension was lifted. Johnson’s next fight was on January 24, 2015 at “UFC on Fox 14” where he knocked out Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson, 34, of Stockholm, Sweden.
On May 23, 2015, Johnson was submitted by Daniel “DC” Cormier, 42, of San Jose, California at “UFC 187.” In their rematch on April 8, 2017 at “UFC 210,” Cormier submitted Johnson again.
After losing to Cormier for the second time, Johnson announced his retirement from MMA competition. He later worked in fighter relations with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
On May 5, 2019, the Boca Raton Police Department arrested Johnson in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida and charged him with one count of battery/domestic battery. He was accused of picking up his then girlfriend in a football hold before carrying her into another room during an argument.
The knockout win at “Bellator 258” improved Johnson’s professional MMA record to 23 wins and 6 losses. He has yet to release a statement about his recent arrest.
