Marina Verbitsky, 46, of Lincoln Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States was recently arrested by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. She was charged with one count of false reporting concerning planting a bomb, explosive or weapon of mass destruction.
On September 6, 2021, Verbitsky, her husband and their son arrived late for their JetBlue flight at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Broward County, Florida, USA. When her family was not allowed to board the plane, she was infuriated and she used profanities at JetBlue employees in the airport, according to a Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
The employees told Verbitsky that the plane was already taxiing to a runway and she responded by telling them there was a bomb in her checked luggage that was on the flight. This caused the plane to be rerouted and its passengers to be evacuated.
Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the bomb threat. They determined that there was not an explosive on the plane and arrested Verbitsky.
Verbitsy has relatives who live in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. She was upset because her son would miss school that day, one of her relatives told Chicago Sun-Times.
“She was nervous about the son needing to go to school,” the relative said of Verbitsy. “It was a mess but it was definitely not meant to be.”
Verbitsky’s bail was set at $10,000, which she posted on September 7, 2021. She appeared before Florida judge, who ordered her to undergo a mental health evaluation.
